In February 1984, we decided to introduce our children to winter sports in Europe, as a change from our life in tropical New Caledonia. Through an agency, we rented an alpine chalet in the luxury ski resort of Megève in the French Alps. It was only after our arrival that we discovered that the agency had made an error in our rental contract, with one zero missing in the cost of the rental. Fortunately it was their error, which we had no way of judging without seeing the rental property, and we were able to enjoy luxury accommodation in a chalet for a reasonable price. Agnès started skiing quite quickly. Alex had more difficulty to get started, but within a few years he far surpassed his parents and could descend the most difficult slopes.
